“These kids can dance. They move with
energy... and their joy is infectious. They look
like they know they were born to dance.
It’s written all over their faces.”
The Auckland Down Syndrome Association Buddy Walk 2010 was a fantastic event that dance4everyone were privileged to take part of during Term One. Our three afterschool recreational classes rehearsed for the March 21st event and despite persistent drizzle on the day, our students performed like stars.
Our first number saw everyone come together and moonwalk to BILLIE JEAN. Everyone negotiated the stage and band equipment with great professionalism which was no easy feat considering we didn’t have the opportunity to rehearse onstage prior to performing. The senior Orakei class continued on with a fabulous YMCA dance, showcasing their talents as disco divas. Our junior Orakei and Papakura classes joined forces to show their TRUE COLOURS, working their coloured scarves with great beauty and grace. Our final number was a great opportunity for the audience to participate. Inspired again by Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five, we showed the audience how good we are at BLAMING IT ON THE BOOGIE! It was fantastic to look out and see parents, families, friends and all enjoying our performance, having a laugh and joining us in dancing.
dance4everyone would like to extend our gratitude to Crystal and the team of organisers of Buddy Walk 2010 for organizing a great event and inviting us to be involved. It is always awesome for our students to experience performing and we hope to have the opportunity again in 2011. We managed to take some brilliant photos of everyone dancing and were very grateful to receive certificates for the students for their participation.
Everyone had a lot of fun and we received some lovely feedback from parents:
“Congrats once again to our fabulous leader and muse Allie and her wonderful team of Natalie and Rebecca! You brought so much joy to us all on Sunday. Thank you for going to the trouble of organising it on your precious weekend over and above the call of duty!! We are all so lucky to be part of the dance4everyone world.”
“We just wanted to say how much we enjoyed the dance performance today. All the dancers did a wonderful performance.”
And from one of our students:
"it made me feel good up there Mum"
This is how we know we are achieving something wonderful! A huge thank you to our students – it is you who make these amazing things possible.
Until next time
Allie, Rebecca and Natalie
